In the fall of 2015, Nielsen-Massey teamed up with CHAOS Brew Club of Chicago once again for their third annual Homebrew Challenge. Much like the years prior, the competition received numerous entries from talented home brewers throughout Chicagoland. These unique brews were scored by many certified judges on December 12th, 2015. First place overall and best flavor category winner was awarded to Eileen Uchima from Naperville, Illinois with her Dreamsicle Gose brew using Pure Orange Extract and Tahitian Pure Vanilla Extract. Second overall winner and best vanilla category winner was awarded to Mark Westmeyer of Chicago Heights, Illinois with his Creeping Death Imperial Stout using Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract. Third place was awarded to Mike Uchima of Naperville, Illinois for his Down Under Vanilla Mild brew using Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract.

We would like to thank CHAOS Brew Club and all other participating clubs and home brewers for an incredible competition. Hope to see you all again next year.

In the fall of 2014, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas teamed up with CHAOS Brew Club again for their second annual Homebrew Challenge. This competition was designed to challenge local home brewers to create an original brew using vanilla and flavor extracts provided by Nielsen-Massey. Much like last year, we received numerous entries from Chicagoland beer-enthusiasts who creatively used Nielsen-Massey’s exceptional flavors and vanillas to create great one-of-kind brews. These signature brews were scored by 15 judges on December 6, 2014, at Derby Bar & Grill in Chicago, Illinois. The beer awarded best in show was “Rosewater Blonde Ale,” which used Nielsen-Massey’s Rose Water and was prepared and submitted by Patrick Elder of Naperville, IL.

This year, we awarded 3  winners as well as named two honorable mentions:

  • First Place: Patrick Elder of Naperville, IL – “Rosewater Blonde Ale” using Nielsen-Massey Rose Water
  • Second Place: Kyle Nordquist of La Grange Park, IL - “Invisibility Cloak” using Nielsen-Massey Pure Chocolate and Pure Coffee Extracts
  • Third Place: Dan Reinhold of Oak Park, IL - “XXXmas Ale” using Nielsen-Massey Pure Peppermint Extract
